Springtime Blooming at the Bungalow

I know it’s not really spring yet, but we’ve been having teasers in the past couple of weeks. The crocuses, daffodils, and cherry blossoms are blooming early! We’ve had some warm and sunny weather, up to 60 degrees, and 11 days ago I mowed the lawn for the first time this year.

This was Feb. 9th last year:

And these are from Feb. 15th, this year:

We’re not doing much in the yard and garden this year (again), but we’re having some work done on the house. Finally we’ve gotten around to having a crawl space dug out under our pop-out closets and vapor barriers and insulation put in there and in the existing crawl space under the kitchen. We really needed to block some rodent entry points, too, and that was part of the same project. In the next few weeks, we’ll have the window for the basement bedroom (you can kind of see it in the photo above) dug out and expanded to make that a real, legal bedroom.

We’ve also had plans drawn up to renovate the basement, to make the stairs less cramped and add a bathroom, mainly. Eventually we’ll get bids for that work. We’re still deciding what we really want done with the basement, though. Should it be a short-term guest rental space, or more of a separate apartment for a longer-term rental? Or should we keep using it the way we are, as laundry, storage, and guest space? We get a lot of use out of the street-level entry for our bikes and strollers, and as our family grows, it might be nice to have a play and/or work space down there. We could put in musical instruments and exercise equipment! And with a bathroom down there, my grandma could visit us without having to climb any stairs.

In January, we did some work organizing and cleaning up and got a futon down there, and it’s looking pretty good!
